Hot Yoga and Hot Weather

Joani Nunez - Friday, June 05, 2009

As the heat increases outside to match the heat inside the yoga room, it becomes especially important to maintain good hydration. Studies show that 80% of the US population is chronically dehydrated.... We want you to remain among the 20% that is consistently well hydrated, so please remember to drink plenty of water throughout the day. The water that you drink during class is more a reward than anything else. If you wait to hydrate yourself until you are in class you're going to have a miserable class. The hydration that your body uses during the class itself happens long before you start Pranayama Breathing!

If you are seriously dehydrated, during or after class you may experience some of the following symptoms:

  • Sharp thirst
  • Dry mouth
  • Dark urine
  • Fatigue and weakness
  • Chills
  • Head rush
  • Headache
  • Increased heart rate (not related to balancing stick or triangle pose ; )
  • Increased respiration
  • Increased body temperature
  • Decrease sweating
  • Decreased urination
  • Muscle cramps
  • Tingling limbs

All of this can be easily avoided by mindfully consuming enough water throughout the day to keep your cells hydrated.

If you take class often, it's also extremely important that you replace your electrolytes. Electrolytes are chemical substances that become electrically charged ions that regulate and conduct electric currents in the body; they are vital for the function of your nerves and muscles. It's easy to deplete your electrolytes by sweating heavily and drinking copiously, which are hallmarks of Bikram Yoga. If you start to feel "flu-ish" that's an early warning. You need to stay well hydrated, but that can also contribute to flushing the electrolytes out of your body. Everyone who practices BY regularly should pick up an electrolyte supplement at the health food store, or (my personal favorite), drink Zico coconut water after class. It will taste like pure ambrosia and at the same time will take care of your electrolyte replacement.

Summer is just getting started. Please take good care of yourself.

The Power and Importance of Silence

Joani Nunez - Wednesday, May 27, 2009
From the minute the alarm goes off in the morning, to the final "good night" wish before sleeping, many people are immersed in sound all day long. Because of this they look forward to the silence they find in the yoga room before and after class. This is the only meditation time many, many people get all day, and it's only in this silence that they are able to connect with their inner voice, their spirit. So please, please do not talk in the yoga room. Be mindful of your fellow yogis.

We have tons of space throughout both schools where you can socialize - in the hallways, the lobbies, and on the benches outside on the sidewalks. That's why we created these areas.... So you can chat and hang and have all kinds of fun. That's hugely important! And just as important? The peaceful, uplifitng silence in the yoga room before and after class. So please, please do not talk in the yoga room. Be mindful of your fellow yogis.

Bikram Yoga After Surgery

Joani Nunez - Saturday, May 23, 2009

Yes, it's true. Bikram Yoga is one of the most therapeutic forms of hatha yoga available today. It's also a very vigorous style of yoga, and that means you need to give your body time to heal internally if you've had major surgery. Please do not rush back into the room! Use common sense along with your doctor's guidance. And make sure your doctor understands just how vigorous Bikram Yoga is before talking him or her into giving you a release....

I know you're anxious to get started again, but be mindful; and be kind to your body. A good rule of thumb regarding surgery is to give yourself at least 8 weeks to heal before taking class. If you've had something like a hip replacement done, give yourself 6 months. And straight from Bikram's mouth, "take it easy, honey" when you come back. Do not push yourself! Remember there are five aspects of mind that Bikram Yoga bestows, not four: They are, "Faith, Self-control, Determination, Concentration, and PATIENCE!" For goodness sake.... Please, practice patience.
